The Series Historic Buildings in Transylvania, launched in 1993, presents the most precious examples of Transylvanian built heritage connected to the Hungarian culture, with the purpose of drawing the general public's attention on values, heritage and our responsibilities towards these. The publications of this series are recommended especially to those who at present own or use such values, but also to those who are interested in history, architecture and the Transylvanian art.
Number 27 of the Series Historic Buildings in Transylvania presents the former Benedictine monastery church of Cluj-Mănăştur, the current St. Mary's Parish Church. The Benedictine abbey was an 11th century royal foundation inside an earlier hill fort. During the archaeological excavations, 13th century building remains and the foundations of a rotunda were found. The monastery, functioning as an important locus credibilis in the Middle Ages, ceased its activities in 1556 due to the spread of Reformation. Only the 15th century choir and sacristy were preserved from the original Gothic church. The building's conservation took place in the 19th century, along with the reconstruction of the present nave (1896), the ornate western portal being a 19th century copy. Beginning with 1924, it was rented by the Greek Catholic Church and from 1948 by the Orthodox one. It has been functioning as a Roman Catholic parish church since 1994.
