The Series Historic Buildings in Transylvania, launched in 1993, presents the most precious examples of Transylvanian built heritage connected to the Hungarian culture, with the purpose of drawing the general public's attention on values, heritage and our responsibilities towards these. The publications of this series are recommended especially to those who at present own or use such values, but also to those who are interested in history, architecture and the Transylvanian art.
Number 13 of the Series Historic Buildings in Transylvania presents the castle of Făgăraş. The original, mediaeval castle was reconstructed in the 16th and 17th centuries. Four bastions of the ample castle with an irregular pentagonal layout are of New Italian type, while one is of Old Italian type. The inner palace, fortified with round and polygonal towers, gained its present aspect through construction works ordered by Boldizsár Báthory and Gábor Bethlen. Its most representative parts are the western wing with a loggia and the eastern wing that has windows decorated with the coat of arms of the Báthory family. Presently the castle, kept in a relatively good state of preservation, functions as a museum.
