The Series Historic Buildings in Transylvania, launched in 1993, presents the most precious examples of Transylvanian built heritage connected to the Hungarian culture, with the purpose of drawing the general public's attention on values, heritage and our responsibilities towards these. The publications of this series are recommended especially to those who at present own or use such values, but also to those who are interested in history, architecture and the Transylvanian art.
Number 33 of the Series Historic Buildings in Transylvania presents the Castle in Gilău. The settlement was mentioned in written sources for the first time in 1246, according to which King Béla IV donated the property to the bishop. In 1428 a castellum (castle) is mentioned, which was built around a pallatio (palace). The reconstruction in Renaissance style, ordered by László Geréb, must have been a decisive period in the building's evolution. The castle changed several owners throughout the centuries, while it was also modified, until being completely destroyed in the anti-Habsburg insurrection led by Ferenc Rákóczi II. Its 19th century reconstruction was ordered by Count Dénes Bánffy. Starting with the year 1972, the castle functioned as an orphanage.
