The Series Historic Buildings in Transylvania, launched in 1993, presents the most precious examples of Transylvanian built heritage connected to the Hungarian culture, with the purpose of drawing the general public's attention on values, heritage and our responsibilities towards these. The publications of this series are recommended especially to those who at present own or use such values, but also to those who are interested in history, architecture and the Transylvanian art.
Number 36 of the Series Historic Buildings in Transylvania presents the Unitarian Church in Suatu, first mentioned in 1213. The church, existing prior to 1311, was built by the then powerful Suki family. The nave and choir had Gothic vaults. Based on the preserved keystones decorated with the coats of arms of the Suki family, respectively those of the pope and of Sigismund of Luxembourg, the construction may be dated to around 1418. A large number of frescoes are preserved in the church, among which we should mention the Pietà and an unknown female saint dating from the 14th century, respectively a Last Judgement from the 15th century, whose closest analogy may be found in Slovakia. In the 18th century, the church was modified by László Suki. Unfortunately, a large part of the frescoes were covered up in 1925 and an intervention in 1970 caused a large amount of damage.
