The Series Historic Buildings in Transylvania, launched in 1993, presents the most precious examples of Transylvanian built heritage connected to the Hungarian culture, with the purpose of drawing the general public's attention on values, heritage and our responsibilities towards these. The publications of this series are recommended especially to those who at present own or use such values, but also to those who are interested in history, architecture and the Transylvanian art.
Number 3 of the Series Historic Buildings in Transylvania presents the Gothic Calvinist church placed on one of the oldest streets in Cluj. The originally Franciscan church was built between 1486 and 1503 together with the cloister, at the initiative of King Matthias Corvinus. In 1556, under the influence of the religious Reformation, the Franciscan order was banished from Cluj, after that the church being ravaged in 1603 and the monastery torn down. The church, becoming a possession of the Calvinist Church, was vaulted once again between 1638 and 1646 by György Rákóczi I, who called master builders from nowadays Latvia, and the college erected on the cloister site was completed in 1654. The pulpit dating from 1646, as well as the epitaphs placed inside the church are of great value as well.
