The Series Historic Buildings in Transylvania, launched in 1993, presents the most precious examples of Transylvanian built heritage connected to the Hungarian culture, with the purpose of drawing the general public's attention on values, heritage and our responsibilities towards these. The publications of this series are recommended especially to those who at present own or use such values, but also to those who are interested in history, architecture and the Transylvanian art.
Number 5 of the Series Historic Buildings in Transylvania presents the cultural values and the natural beauty of Rimetea village. The settlement known for mining and processing iron is placed in a narrow valley surrounded by rocky peaks. The whitewashed houses of the main square, built after de fire from 1870 in Classicist and Eclectic styles, form the best preserved architectural ensemble of this region. The bolts, door handles and the cast iron lattice work, the traditional furniture, the embroideries and the colourful folk costumes suggest the pulse of the economic and spiritual life from the past. The wooden houses of the miners dating from the 18th century, as well as the serfs' houses represent as well important architectural values. The Transilvania Trust Foundation tried to protect this built heritage through a project launched in 1996, financed by the Local Council of the 5th Sector in Budapest. The rehabilitated vernacular houses are the witnesses of this initiative.
