The Series Historic Buildings in Transylvania, launched in 1993, presents the most precious examples of Transylvanian built heritage connected to the Hungarian culture, with the purpose of drawing the general public's attention on values, heritage and our responsibilities towards these. The publications of this series are recommended especially to those who at present own or use such values, but also to those who are interested in history, architecture and the Transylvanian art.
Number 38 of the Series Historic Buildings in Transylvania presents the Martinuzzi-Bethlen Castle, built in late Renaissance Italian style. The Dominican monastery, founded around 1300, became deserted in the 16th century, its buildings being transformed into a castle between 1546 and 1551 by George Martinuzzi-Utiesşenić. In 1614, the ensemble and its domain became the possession of Gábor Bethlen, who began, together with architect Giacomo Resti from Verna, to build a fortified castle, a hexagonal ensemble inscribed in an oval (from which however only four wings were built). In 1792, the castle was burnt down, and later reconstructions only included the neighbouring wings to the north. The imaginary reconstruction of the Renaissance ensemble was permitted by the surveys taken between 1808 and 1809.
